Sexually Transmitted Disease
Just the Facts
The number of people infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continues to be a serious problem in our society. Each year in the United States 15 million new people are infected with curable STDs and 340 million are infected worldwide. Many of these STDs can be contracted even with the use of a latex condom, so there is really no such thing as safe sex if your partner is infected. Many types of sexual activities can lead to STDs.
The following pages will educate you about some of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in North America. Each disease is listed with symptoms, risk factors, risks to pregnancy, and prevention information. You will also find information about prevalence and reproductive health. You can also download the Epigee STD overview page, a downloadable pdf fact sheet for students, with information about all STDs discussed.
