Contraceptive Choices

Which Method is Right for Me?

Start with Prayer

We all like to think we are in control of something as simple as our reproductive organs. But the fact that half of all pregnancies to American women are unintended, and half of these end in abortion, would say otherwise. Modern contraceptives have given many a false sense of security and resulted in increased sexual activity outside of marriage, single parenthood, sexually transmitted disease, and abortion. Each Christian couple should put God's will at the forefront of their reproductive choices. This means prayer, reflective discussion, and consultation with your pastor or priest about this important issue. God's will for your family may surprise you.

Take your choices to God in prayer.

Are You Single?

Sexual abstinence is recommended for unmarried people. It is the only method that is one-hundred percent effective against unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.

Looking for Something Reversible?

Barrier methods of contraception are popular because they are easily reversible. These include male condoms, the diaphragm, contraceptive sponge, cervical caps, and female condoms. Many of these are used with spermicides. If you are allergic to latex or spermicidal chemicals, read on. A natural method may be right for you.

Are You Catholic?

Natural methods are the only acceptable method for Roman Catholics. The most popular are the symptothermal method and the newer standard days method (Cycle Beads). The advent of fertility computers makes natural methods easier to use by telling a couple when sex will or won't result in pregnancy. Natural methods require the cooperation of both partners and pose no health risks.

What about The Pill?

Methods using female hormones as birth control tend to be more effective than barrier or natural methods. Why? Because these methods may prevent the implantation of an embryo into the uterus as one mechanism of action. Hormonal methods include combination oral contraceptives and the mini-pill, the vaginal ring, contraceptive patch, injectables and some intrauterine devices (IUDs). These are the same drugs used in emergency contraceptive pills. All hormonal contraceptives pose a risk to preborn life and should not be used by Christians.

Done Having Children?

Couples who no longer wish to have children may consider a permanent method. This includes female sterilization, also called tubal ligation, and vasectomy for men. Surgical sterilization is one of the most popular methods used by couples. However, regret is a common problem with these methods, as evidenced by the flourishing vasectomy reversal industry.
